From Sheriff Court to Outer Space! DYW North Highland Celebrates a Successful Year with Over 400 Events and Activities for Young People in Caithness and Sutherland.

DYW North Highland is celebrating a remarkable year, delivering over 400 events and activities to young people across the North Highlands designed to support their growth, help them make informed decisions about their futures, and prepare them for the world of work.

In the period from June 2023 to May 2024, the DYW team, based across Caithness and Sutherland, facilitated a diverse range of experiences for young people, from primary school through to S6. These included a day at Wick Sheriff Court, where students explored both sides of the dock, a behind-the-scenes tour of Merlin Cinema, and hands-on pizza-making sessions at Burghfield House in Dornoch, UHI’s professional cookery classroom. These activities provided invaluable, real-world insights into a wide range of professions.

In the classroom, the programme was equally dynamic. Local industry leaders from sectors including law, hospitality, health and social care, engineering, construction, and the arts, supported over 350 pupils in participating in mock interviews. Apprenticeships were also a key focus, with current apprentices sharing their journeys and experiences, helping to inspire the next generation. A standout moment of the year was a visit from Airbus Defence, which introduced students to the exciting possibilities of careers in space and encouraged them to aim for the stars!

A major highlight was the region’s largest job, career, training, and recruitment event, where over 320 attendees engaged with 35 exhibitors. Participants gained valuable insights into current job opportunities, essential skills for future careers, and available training and apprenticeship programmes.

DYW North Highland works in close partnership with employers to help shape the future workforce. This year’s achievements highlight its continued commitment to empowering young people and equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed for successful careers.

Trudy Morris, Chief Executive, commented:

“We have been working closely with local businesses and organisations to create a strong narrative of opportunity for the young people in our region. We are incredibly grateful to business leaders who have generously given their time and expertise to help inform and inspire young minds. The positive impact of these interactions will undoubtedly ripple through the years to come.

It is vital for our young people to have access to real-life experiences that open their eyes to the multitude of career pathways ahead. Whether these experiences take place in the classroom or out in the workplace, they have a significant impact on preparing our young people for their futures.”

Tom McGee, Operations Manager DYW North Highland Commented:

“DYW North Highland plays a vital role in fostering and strengthening partnerships between local businesses and education providers. There are numerous ways for businesses to get involved, from hosting skills sessions, career events, and work placements to offering workplace visits and mentoring opportunities.

By working collaboratively we ensure that young people receive the guidance, support, and connections they need to succeed. If your business is interested in making a positive impact by helping young people prepare for the world of work, we would love to hear from you!”
