Job Description
Modern Engineering Apprenticeships
Duration: 4 years
Starting salary: £15,869
Location: Thurso
Rolls-Royce develops safety critical, complex power and propulsion solutions for use in the air, at sea, and on land. We’ve designed the world’s most efficient large aero-engine, powered nuclear submarines, enabled land-speed records, and even supported NASA missions on the edge of space.
For over 60 years we’ve provided the power for the UK Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet, and at our site near Thurso we operate and manage the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment on behalf of the Ministry of Defence. Our apprentices play a vital role in helping us keep the UK safe.
Join us and you can expect outstanding career support from day one, debt-free qualifications, and the chance to build an amazing career in a friendly, supportive environment where you can be yourself and be your best.
What you’ll do
In your first year, you’ll gain a strong foundation in the practical skills you need. Over the following three years, you’ll broaden and deepen your knowledge through a range of attachments within our Submarines business all the while working towards completing your Apprenticeship Standard and gaining relevant engineering qualifications.
This is hands-on work. Throughout your apprenticeship you can expect to train on state-of-the-art products, equipment and machinery. All while being guided and supported by engineering experts.
You’ll be working on live projects and earn as you learn through formal training as well as practical experience.
What could you become?
You’ll develop specialist skills in your chosen area:
Mechanical Fitter: Follow detailed instructions and technical drawings to assemble mechanical systems for nuclear submarines and its support facilities, using hand and machine tools and measuring equipment.
Instrument Technician: We use instruments to measure pressure, temperature, radiation, and chemical properties. Learn how to install, maintain and repair defects on the equipment that is vital to our operations.
Electrical Technician: Do detailed and specialist work installing, testing and
adjusting electrical systems and repairing any issues in the wiring of our buildings, machines and other equipment.
What you’ll need
You’ll need a minimum of four National 5s in Maths, English and Physics/Engineering Science, plus one other technical subject at grade A-C.
Every bit as important as your academic achievements, are the personal qualities you bring to the role. We’re looking for people who are adaptable, full of initiative and eager to learn and succeed.
Beyond that, we’ll want to see evidence that you’re genuinely interested in the practical side of engineering or hands on activities. For example, we’d like to hear if you enjoy figuring out how things work; making things, fixing bikes or about a practical project you’ve done at school or home, or a club you’ve been involved with
To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business an individual has to hold a minimum of a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if the individual does not currently already have this in place. Due to the nature of work the Business conducts and the protection of certain assets we can only progress applications from individuals who are a UK national or, in MoD approved cases, a Dual National from a non-ITAR country.
What you’ll get
- A competitive starting salary with annual pay rises, and pension
- 33 days’ holiday per year (including bank holidays)
- A choice of voluntary benefits including discounts at nationwide stores, gyms, discounted health care, free digital GP, Cycle to Work scheme and more all available on our TotalReward portal
- Continuous learning and development
- Support from managers, leaders, mentors and other apprentices
- Opportunities to develop beyond your day-to-day role and get involved in social activities
- An independent, 24-hour, confidential counselling service
